Artists of Promise INSTRUMENTAL Performance Competition Application

PLEASE READ ALL OF THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION

COMPETITION DATES

  • Piano, guitar, and all other instrumental solos take place in-person at Glendale Community College on Friday, March 4th, 2022.
  • All instrumental ensembles and jazz ensembles take place in-person at Chandler-Gilbert Community College on Saturday, March 5th, 2022.

GENERAL INFORMATION & ELIGIBILITY

  • To participate in the competition, you must be a currently registered student at Maricopa Community College during the semester of the competition (MCCCD faculty members, both adjunct and residential, in any discipline are not eligible to participate). 
  • Solo competition entrants must be enrolled in private music instruction (MUPxxx) specific to that category at their college. 
  • Solo competition entrants must be enrolled in an ensemble class at their college.
  • Solo competition entrants must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours of Music courses at their college. 
  • Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble competition entrants must be enrolled in any instrumental music ensemble course. 
  • Entrants may participate in a maximum of three ensembles. 
  • Prior First Place competition winners in the Solo categories are not eligible to participate in the same Solo category again. 
  • Prior First Place Ensemble competition winners are not eligible to participate in the same Ensemble category again with the exact same ensemble personnel. 

For solo and ensemble competitions, you will be notified one week prior to the competition with your assigned performance time.

PLEASE NOTE: First Place Music Winners in each category will perform at the Artists of Promise Gala event on April 21st, 2022 at Paradise Valley Community College. All awards will be presented at this event.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC COMPETITION CATEGORIES

There are six categories:

  • Instrumental (non-guitar or piano) Solo
  • Piano Solo 
  • Guitar Solo 
  • Improvised Jazz Solo
  • Classical Instrumental Ensemble 
  • Jazz Ensemble 

COMPETITION EXPECTATIONS

FOR ALL CATEGORIES

  • Appropriate dress for competition is required. 
  • Check-in rooms and individual competition times will be announced. 
  • Check-in at least 30 minutes prior to your scheduled performance time. 
  • Arrive early to ensure use of practice room. 

INSTRUMENTAL SOLO

  • Maximum of 8 minutes
    • Sonatas and concerti are allowed with proper editorial cuts to fit the maximum allotted time.
  • Bring an unmarked original edition of your music (plus evidence of online purchase if PDF score is used). 

GUITAR SOLO

  • Performance from memory only.
  • Maximum of 10 minutes.
    • One or two selections allowed
    • No concerti allowed.
  • Bring an unmarked original edition of your music (plus evidence of online purchase if PDF score is used). 
  • Work performed must be published repertoire—no original compositions or arrangements. 

PIANO SOLO

  • Performance from memory only 
  • Maximum of 12 minutes 
    • One or two solo selections allowed
    • No concerti allowed. 
  • Bring an unmarked original edition of your music (plus evidence of online purchase if PDF score is used). 

IMPROVISED JAZZ SOLO

  • Soloist will perform 2 pieces.
    • "Straight No Chaser" by Thelonious Monk, including a performance of the head, and a maximum of 4 improvised choruses.
    • 1 jazz standard selected from the following list:
      • “Autumn Leaves” by Joseph Kosma
      • “All the Things You Are” by Jerome Kern
      • “Along Came Betty” by Benny Golson
      • “There Is No Greater Love” by Isham Jones
      • “There Will Never Be Another You” by Harry Warren
  • The blues and chosen jazz standard will be played with iReal Pro jazz play-alongs
    • These recordings will be provided by the competition.
    • Students are encouraged to practice their choices with the iReal Pro app prior to the event.
  • The total performance time of both works will be a maximum of 8 minutes.

INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLE

  • Bring an unmarked original edition of your music (plus evidence of online purchase if PDF score is used). 
  • An ensemble of 2-9 students may be formed for the sole purpose of this competition. 
  • Maximum of 10 minutes. 
  • All participants in the performance will be judged as members of the ensemble and must therefore all be students.
    • There are no accompanists in this category. 

JAZZ ENSEMBLE

  • Bring an unmarked original edition of your music (plus evidence of online purchase if PDF score is used). 
  • An ensemble of 2-9 nine students may be formed for the sole purpose of this competition. 
  • Maximum of 10 minutes. 
  • All participants in the performance will be judged as members of the ensemble and must therefore all be students. 
    • There are no accompanists in this category. 

AWARDS

  • First place work in each category will be performed at the Artists of Promise Gala scheduled for April 2022.
  • All awards will be issued after the 2022 Artists of Promise Gala. (Ensembles will share award)
    • $300 for first place
    • $200 for second place
    • $100 for third place
