Music – Vocal Solo Competition

Overview

Each year, the Maricopa Community Colleges sponsor a districtwide competition to encourage and recognize student achievement in the following categories:

  • Vocal Classical Solo Treble
  • Vocal Classical Solo TBB
  • Musical Theater Solo Treble
  • Musical Theater Solo TBB

First Place Music Winners in each category will be invited to perform  in a live performance as part of the 2022 Artist of Promise Music Showcase on April 21, 2022 in Paradise Valley Community College’s Center for the Performing Arts.

Artist of Promise VOCAL Solo Competition

PLEASE READ ALL OF THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION

GENERAL INFORMATION:


Each year, the Maricopa Community Colleges sponsor a districtwide competition to encourage and recognize student achievement in Music Vocal Performance

  • To participate in the competition, you must be a currently registered student at a Maricopa Community College (MCCCD faculty members, both adjunct and residential, in any discipline are not eligible to participate).
  • Vocal Solo competition entrants must be enrolled in MUPXXX - Private Voice Lessons (1-2 credits), and at least four (4) other credits in Music classes at their college (minimum total of 6 credits in music) for the Fall 2022 semester.
  • Prior First Place Vocal Solo competition winners are not eligible to participate.
  • You will be notified one week prior to the competition with your assigned performance time. 
  • Although the student registration for the competition is online, the adjudication will be in  person. 
  • PLEASE NOTE: First Place Music Winners in each category will be invited to perform  in a live performance as part of the 2022 Artist of Promise Music Showcase on April 21, 2022 in Paradise Valley Community College’s Center for the Performing Arts. All First Place Music winners are required to attend both the dress rehearsal and the performance. All awards will be presented at this event.

Competition Guidelines

For all categories:

Appropriate dress for competition is required.

Music – Vocal Solo Categories

  • Vocal Classical Treble (Soprano, Mezzo, Alto or Countertenor) and Solo TBB (Tenor, Baritone, and Bass)                      
  • Musical Theater Solo Treble (Soprano, Mezzo, Alto or Countertenor) and Solo TBB (Tenor, Baritone, and Bass)   

Vocal Classical Solo Treble (Soprano, Mezzo, Alto or Countertenor) and Solo TBB (Tenor, Baritone, and Bass):

  • Maximum duration of 8 minutes of music
  • Work performed must be published repertoire, no original compositions or arrangements.
  • Performance from memory only. 
  • A minimum of two contrasting selections with a maximum of three selections will be allowed.         
  • Entrants should announce the title, composer, and production (if applicable) prior to each performance. Do not announce your name.

Musical Theater Solo Treble (Soprano, Mezzo, Alto or Countertenor) and Solo TBB (Tenor, Baritone, and Bass):   

  • Maximum duration of 8 minutes of music (videos may be up to 10 minutes)
  • Work performed must be a published repertoire, no original compositions or arrangements.
  • Performance from memory only.             
  • Two contrasting selections are required.     
  • Entrants should announce the title, composer, and production (if applicable) prior to each performance. Do not announce your name.           

Awards

  • First place work in each category will be performed at the Artists of Promise Gala scheduled for April 2022.
  • All awards will be issued after the 2022 Artists of Promise Gala.
    • $300 for first place
    • $200 for second place 
    • $100 for third place
